Malawi, a landlocked country in southeast Africa has a population of approx. 14 million. In 2006 it was estimated that 4.9 million people were at risk as a result of food shortages (USAID). 48% of children under the age of 5 are stunted, and 5% severely malnourished. The under 5's mortality rate was 133 per 1000 live births (UNICEF). In 2006 I had the great privilege to visit Malawi and live with a family in the Mgwindhi village in Nkhotakota. Sharing the floor of the village chiefs hut, (Simon Banda), with writer Alan Martin we experienced the most unbelievable hospitality and friendship from everyone we met, during such difficult and truly heartbreaking times.
